Citizen scientists are passionate people who contribute to documenting biodiversity in any area of the globe. With the Taxon expedition, we regularly conduct fieldwork in the tropical forests of Borneo and Brunei and discover new species. This demonstrates how many species still need to be described and how much more we need to learn from nature.
One of our last species discovered was a gastropod. They can have the shell or not. Those species without shells are usually called slugs. Gastropods are a phenomenal group of invertebrate animals. They occur in the most diverse habitats that you can imagine. From aquatic habitat to terrestrial, and for some reason, they are exceptionally rich and diverse in limestone substrate. Well, the reason why this group is exceptionally rich in limestone substrate is due to the characteristics of their shell. It is made from carbonate, and this element is rich in limestone. Therefore, the abundance of carbonate has facilitated a rapid and punctiform diversification of these species in these habitats.
