Assessing Magnoliaceae through time: Major global efforts to track extinction risk status and ex situ conservation

Magnolia is an iconic plant with its large and bright flowers is used as an ornamental plant in cities. The centre of diversity, basically where most of the species occur, is in two tropical regions. Namely, southwest China, Indochina in Southeast Asia, and Colombia in South America. The status of species conservation in the field was not well known, and since early 2000, major projects on assessing the threat of these species have been undertaken to develop the Red List of Magnolia Family. A second assessment was conducted in 2021, whereas in this paper, we compared the two assessments. The paper reports the tangible importance of Red List assessment, which has been the baseline for several projects in Magnolia conservation, and, at the same time, the work that still needs to be done to ensure that none of the species of this family goes extinct.
