No, we are not presenting the elixir of long life, but of a tropical fruit cultivated for centuries, the Papaya!

Originally from Mexico, it was already used by the Maya over 4000 years ago. Its worldwide distribution started with the Spanish. Around the year 1500 they transported the seeds to Panama, and Dominican Republic.

After this first step, the Spanish and the Portuguese expand the cultivation of this fruit in the east, Philippines, Malesia and India. The fruit was soon adopted by the local communities in their diet.

Today, papaya is cultivated in all tropical regions. If you are in Borneo (what a coincidence) you can easily observe this plant and even have a nap under its large leaves. The leaves are relatively large, up to 70cm long. Whereas the plant can stand to 8 meters tall with fruits, in some case, of 8kg.

The fruit properties are countless, from the anti-aging, thanks to the antioxidants, and promote digestion. You may say that this is one of the reasons why in the Caribbean it is called the fruit of the angels.

Papaya it is used for a wide range of food supplement, from vitamins, minerals as potassium, zinc, and Magnesium, which convey strength and it is helpful against fatigue.

Thanks to its sweetness, juicy and refreshing taste, it is appreciated by human and many wild animals. It is rather common to see farmer complaining that monkey have eaten and stolen their papaya.
